Nicolaas Tulp (1593-1674).
M readers who are familiar with Rembrandt’s masterpiece, “Anatomy lessons of Dr. Tulp” may have overlooked the medical background and contributions of Dr. Nicolaas Tulp. He was an anatomy teacher and practicing physician of repute in Amsterdam, not a figurative character. His Latin name was Nicolaus Petrus. He came to be known as Tulp, because an auction place for tulip bulbs was located in fro...

We define topological and analytic indices in R/Z K-theory and show that they are equal.

Neural stem cells (NSCs) persist in the adult mammalian subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle. Primary NSCs generate rapidly dividing intermediate progenitor cells, which in turn generate neuroblasts that migrate along the rostral migratory stream (RMS) to the olfactory bulb (OB). Here, we have examined the role of the COUP-TFI and COUP-TFII orphan nuclear receptor transcription fa...
متن کاملAn Irrational Construction of R from Z
This paper reports on a construction of the real numbers in the ProofPower implementation of the HOL logic. Since the original construction was implemented, some major improvements to the ideas have been discovered. The improvements involve some entertaining mathematics: it turns out that the Dedekind cuts provide many routes one can travel to get from the ring of integers, Z, to the field of r...
متن کاملDISTORTION ELEMENTS IN Diff ∞ (R/Z)
We consider the group of smooth diffeomorphisms of the circle. We show that any recurrent f (in the sense that {f}n∈Z is not discrete) is in fact a distortion element (in the sense that its iterates can be written as short compositions involving finitely many smooth diffeomorphisms). Thus rotations are distortion elements.
